Walvis Bay, Namibia

Before this trip, I couldn’t have told you anything about Namibia. After visiting Walvis Bay for two nights (March 31 and April 1), I can recommend it. On March 31, I took one of the best excursions on the trip so far, a boat ride to visit Pelican Point.

The ride started with an up-close experience with Cape Fur Seal. They are a sub-species of the brown fur seal and Pelican Point is an amazing place to see them. Soon after getting on the boat, the captain invited a brown fur seal up onto the middle seat of our small boat.

We each got a chance to get get close and pose for a picture.

Then, a tamed pelican was enticed onto the boat with fish, and we also got to experience the pelican up close. We could touch the feathers and neck if we wishes.

As we proceeded out of Walvis Bay harbor toward Pelican Point, we passed an abandoned boat that served as a convenient and perch.

I was interested to see these boats all docked together on the same mooring. Our captain said they are sharing a morning to save money. Pretty clever.

Then, the wildlife. There was a sandy peninsula, just full of colony after colony of Cape Fur Seals. They filled the sea, jumping around us. Hard to capture it in pictures, but it was great.

There were also birds, especially pelicans.

The trip concluded with a special lunch, including local oysters. I didn’t partake due to careful eating, but many did and seemed to enjoy. Overall, a great trip. I recommend it if you ever find yourself in Walvis Bay.
