Ostrich Encounter

A Word Association Quiz:

What is the first word that comes to mind when I say: Ostrich?

My answer would have been Australia before this trip.

Now I know that there are plenty of Ostrich farms that can be reached in an excursion from Mossel Bay, South Africa.

Mossel Bay is a holiday destination, with many houses, most of which are used by South Africans who want to vacation by the ocean.

In the excursion I took from Mossle Bay on April 7 (Day 83), the bus took us to an Ostrich farm. The animals we saw were the show animals, so we could visit them and feed them outside of the fences.

We could also see that they come in different colors.

Here is a picture of their eggs. We saw that they are sturdy enough that one can stand on three of them arranged as these are.

Some others are kept for breeding. Still others are good foster parents. Most of the birds on this farm are raised for the products they produce, which include leather, feathers, and meat.

On the way back to the ship, we drove through very interesting scenery.
