Sprung

Sprung is the word that filled my mind when I was allowed out of my cabin on Day 8 after isolation because of COVID.

When I first looked the word sprung up in my online dictionary, I learned that it is the past participle of spring, as in “you can get a more conventional and thicker sprung mattress for the perfect night’s sleep.”

I also learned that the usage of sprung has decreased steadily since 1800, but it usage has started to move up recently.

There is the African American vernacular for sprung: “utterly infatuated with someone.” Well, that certainly wasn’t what I meant.

An informal definition listed for sprung: “escape or release of a prisoner.” Finally, a definition I could embrace. I also learned that there is a 2022 TV show called Sprung. (I understand I am showing my ignorance of some popular culture by admitting this new learning, but have now at least watched the trailer.)

Even after finding the informal definition, I was ambivalent about using Sprung as a title for the blog. But that all changed this morning at breakfast. Sitting behind me was a couple who were talking with their neighbors. One of them said, “we’ve been sprung.” Then they continued a conversation about just having been released from their own COVID isolation of five days. Bingo! If this informal word has entered daily usage by the demographic on this ship, I’m going with it.

Today is Day 14. I have now successfully navigated the post-sprung five days of masking and feel very well. I did miss the whole country of Mexico and the country of Peru has now been cancelled for everyone (not surprising there.) But I was able to visit Guatemala on Day 11 and El Salvador on Day 12.

There have been lots of requests for pictures, and there I must disappoint. My novice WordPress skills have not surmounted an error messages from trying to load in images, but I will work on this.

  1. Hi Cathy, I’m so sorry to hear you had Covid at the beginning of your trip. I hope that you had a mild case! I am enjoying reading about your adventures, and can empathize completely with your technical difficulties! Not my strong suit! You are so inspiring! Enjoy!

  2. Congrats on surviving your isolation. Sending best wishes on your re-entry to the human interactions onboard. Enjoy your new friends!!

  3. I can only imagine how many books you may have read before you were sprung! And I do hope you were able to view some things from your cabin window, or perhaps had some activities to pursue. Hope you had the energy despite Covid; may the adventures spring forth!

    Spring has sprung
    The grass has riz
I wonder where the birdies is
They must be on the wing
    But that’s upsird
Cause the wing is on the bird

I might have missed a line but it’s close enough🥰

  7. Stroll the deck. Take the air.

What times show up on your blog? The 1/28/2023 comments from your friends re the “Sprung” post show times on 1/28/23 that have not yet occurred in EST. AND, you’re way west of us. Just wondering. Maybe the Captain knows.

    1. I did check the web info on the time issue and seems like it is not easy to fix. I did check that my time and date is correct, but beyond that, seems like I should hire a developer, which I’m guessing was posted by a developer. So, that annoyance we will have to live with. And, interestingly, we are now heading for the coast of Ecuador and have come back to Eastern Standard time. Turns out the Mexican and Central American coast veers east, so for a while, I am in Eastern Standard (NY) time.
